该概念设想的专利申请号为2009/0097671，申请时间为4月16日，目的是确保在开放式的办公室或大堂中的交流的保密性。即使是与竞争对手共处一室，它也能形成安全的隔音层。 设想者称：“随着办公环境的开放越来越普遍，交流者之间的谈话，会有意无意的被第三者听到，从而产生侵犯隐私的问题。”他们的目的便是将人们从这样的担忧中解脱出来。

区别于塑料罩，他们用传感器探测周围的潜在窃听者，然后用扬声器向周围发出一定强度的细微的伪装声响。

听似简单，实际上需要相当的设施基础。房间的墙上必须散布着照明开关大小的装置，它包括一个麦克风、一个扬声器、一个红外定位传感器以及可以连接主机的电路。当需要时，使用者可以通过自己的电脑启动被MIT研究员称之为“声盾Sound Shield”的装置。

与此同时，传感器将识别启动者并描绘出其周围人们的位置。软件将会根据距离的远近推算出谁是对话的参与者，谁是偷听者。 扬声器将会向偷听者发送一种混杂着白色噪音以及随机的嘈杂声的声频，这种微妙模糊的噪音使得偷听者无法识别谈话内容。

Paradiso介绍说这种构思很早以前就已经产生了，只是一直有很多局限性。现在的系统从声源处放出的声音还不能准确的面向偷听者或是谈话者，结果就是，噪音要么太多，要么太少。

例如，当你使用无线对讲机时，线上会产生一种白色噪音，你的讲话内容就会变得模糊不清，声纳技术上称之为干扰（串线杂音）。MIT研究小组表示噪音会变得很吵，并且无处不在。当人们移动时，系统的传感器会随时探测人们的所在的位置，并调节相应的干扰噪音。
当人们突然需要交流想法时，系统同样会做出安全提示，提醒周围是否有人靠的太近。Paradiso说现在人们往往都在一个大型的开放式办公空间工作，这种状况经常发生。

Klaus Moeller, 加拿大安大略省声音伪装系统厂商Logison of Oakville的创建者，被MIT的抱负所打动但同时也担心它的实用性。Logison的专利产品Accumask被用于减弱办公室里的声音传播。 Moeller同时表示：“我真心祝愿MIT好运。在办公环境中，似乎花销会很大，也不太实用。”他认为建筑师将面临布满装置的墙壁或是天花板，因为这样的系统需要这些装置去跟踪办公室里的人。
